Denim was a dirty business. Until we changed it.
We love denims. They are timeless, long lasting and have character. But about three years ago we took a closer look at the denim market. Our conclusion? Denim is a dirty business - both for our environment and for the people who will wear the jeans later.
We wanted to change that. With a denim that is good for people and the environment. We have solved three major problems on the way:
Cotton farming
The main component of conventional denim is conventional cotton. Its farming is subject to monocultures, toxic fertilizers and harmful pesticides.
→ We only use certified organic cotton.
Water consumption & wastewater contamination
In the production of conventional denims, a lot of water is used for dyeing and washing and the groundwater is polluted by dangerous chemicals.
→ We have found GOTS-certified partners who consume little water and only use harmless chemicals.
Bleaching
During bleaching, chemicals that are hazardous to health are used in conventional production - often under unacceptable working conditions.
→ Instead of toxic chlorine and harmful potassium permanganate, we use modern technologies such as lasers and ozone treatment.

Make your denim matter.
Conventional jeans consume a great deal of water in their production, pollute our climate with high CO2 emissions and contaminate our groundwater with hazardous chemicals. DetoxDenim is much better for the environment and our climate:
40% less water consumption
The production of one meter of conventional denim fabric requires approx. 1301 liters of water. Our detox denim, on the other hand, needs on average only 787 liters.
→ In comparison, we save 514 liters of water with every meter of fabric.
64% less CO2 eq.
The production of one meter of DetoxDenim Fabric produces approx. 2.45 kg of greenhouse gases (CO2 eq.) - in contrast to approx. 6.8 kg for conventionally produced jeans.
→ This means that our fabrics emit 64% less CO2 eq. emissions (compared to conventional fabrics).
*Data from our partner ORTA
No environmental pollution from hazardous chemicals
The advantages for the environment already begin with the farming of organic cotton: because no dangerous pesticides are used. The dyeing process as well as the whitening and washing of our jeans also works without toxic solvents and harmful chemicals. Of course, this is a bit more expensive - but also much better for our most important resource: water.
What we are working on
Good is not good enough for us. We take our own standards seriously and want to become even better in the dyeing process.

Show some respect for your skin
Our skin is our largest organ. When we sweat, we do not only excrete toxins through our skin, it can also absorb substances. That is why we should carefully consider which textiles we wear on our skin.
Why harmful chemicals have no business in your denims
Did you know that the production of conventional jeans still uses various harmful chemicals? Some chemicals for example, ensure that cheap colors remain colorfast.
Our skin barrier actually protects us. But as a pajama test has shown, while sweating chemical substances can migrate via the connective tissue into the bloodstream and further into the cells of the organs.
→ We only use toxicologically tested GOTS chemicals in the production of our denims. For you, this means one less thing to worry about.
Why you should rely on your nose
Have you ever had a pair of denims in your hand that smelled bitter? In that case you can rely on your nose. Because this smell is often caused by the chlorine residues in the fibers. They can remain if denim is not rinsed sufficiently after bleaching.
If you start to sweat in such denims, these chlorine residues can lead to skin irritations and even allergies.
→ We bleach our denims completely chlorine free. Believe us: Your skin will thank you.

Our method? Detox everything.
If you want to produce sustainable denims free from toxic substances, you have to look into the whole supply chain: That begins with the cultivation of cotton, continues with the dying of thread and ends with the so called finishing of the denim.
100% organic cotton
In conventional cotton farming, many things go wrong: Toxic chemicals in the fields, genetically modified seeds and enormous water consumption are just some of the problems. But that can work differently.
→ For our denims we use 100% organic cotton from certified cotton suppliers in Turkey. That means much less water consumption and the relinquishment of toxic fertilizers and pesticides.
0% toxic chemicals
Indigo blue from the Far East is generally used to dye denims. The dyeing process uses harmful chemicals that pollute the wastewater.
→ Our artificial indigo contains no toxic solvents and is particularly colorfast due to its high ink fixation rate. In addition, our dyeing process still saves a lot of water.
0% chlorine
In order to lighten the denim blue or give it traces of wear, chlorine-based bleach salts are often sprayed on conventional denims. Since chlorine is particularly volatile, production damages the respiratory tract of factory workers.
→ At ARMEDANGELS we use modern laser and ozone washing technologies. For the rest, we pay attention to environmental and health compatibility. Fun side fact: The laser also saves 62% energy and 67% water.

„Being twisted is better than having no spine at all. “

In February 2015, my critical column about the new feminism in the world created a proper shitstorm. Since then I have distanced myself from my statements.
Since then I have distanced myself from my statements. I am direct and I provoke: therefore I demand more 'forgiveness' on the Internet. Despite strong posture, I suffer from scoliosis (curvature of the spine). As part of the Detox Army, I demand to have each other’s back, even if you don’t have the same opinion.

I settled in Berlin to work on my art in this wonderful city. My most important job today is to be a mother.
I am a role model for my child. I want my son to be as close to nature as possible. Nothing in this world is more important for us, our children and the children of our children than to treat this planet as sustainably as possible.
Excessive consumption is harmful. Also in terms of social media. We — and Mother Earth — need breaks.
